This last section, Frequently Asked Questions, is included to provide answers to possible questions people may have about this guide, acronyms found throughout the guide, etc.

Why is this resource guide necessary?

  • This resource guide is necessary for a variety of reasons, but the major one is that I have not seen anything like it before. While I’ve seen similar hubs for QTBIPOC, most have not had as much diversity as I’m hoping mine will eventually have. As of mid-August 2023, this resource guide includes 1-2 sources per category, and includes QTBIPOC (BIPOC + LGBTQ+ resources), AANHPI and specific AANHPI ethnic groups such as East Asian, Southeast Asian, South Asian, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander and West Asian.

  • The guide includes this many categories because of the aggregation of AANHPI people within our society. With aggregation, researchers are unable to “identify disparities that are not apparent in aggregated data” (American Public Health Association). As a result, one of the other reasons this guide is necessary is to showcase the importance of disaggregation. Disaggregation is “to separate into component parts” (Merriam-Webster). Without disaggregating Asian ethnicities, AANHPI are all lumped into one category (typically Asian or Asian American, and more specifically East Asian). By lumping us into one category, the differences between each Asian ethnic group are not considered. I learned about disaggregation both in my internship and as a youth ambassador (a role I participated in with NCAAT in spring 2023; more information can be found here).

What does the acronym, "QTBIPOC" mean?

  • QTBIPOC means “Queer, Trans, Black, Indigenous, People of Color” (Salisbury PFLAG).

In a similar vein, what does “genderqueer” mean?

  • To be genderqueer means that you may see yourself as “being both male and female, neither male nor female or as falling completely outside these categories” (Human Rights Campaign).

  • In my personal experience, genderqueer is simply a vague term to describe one’s gender identity and can be different for everyone.

What does “AANHPI” mean?

  • AANHPI is an abbreviation for “Asian American, Native Hawaiian, Pacific Islander”. It is a more inclusive term than “AAPI” as it includes and acknowledges Native Hawaiians.

How can I add resources to this guide?

  • This Google Form will not close and will be a place for community members, peers, etc. to add their own resources that may not have initially been included, or that I may not be aware of. This guide is still being updated, despite my internship being over.
